Because of their complex systems, RAID Z data retrieval cases require state-of-the-art facilities and advanced expertise, which we maintain. Our high-qualified specialists and ISO Class 10 Cleanroom allows our company to achieve magnificent results. All these ensure that even with the delicate nature of the RAID Z array, we will do our best to restore your deleted files.

What is RAID Z

RAID is a storage array that collects data not just on a single disk but across multiple disks. Even when there’s a failure, the data can be reconstructed from other drives.

RAID Z uses at least three discs to function and utilize a form of “parity” data block creation for error immunity on the device. These basic three-disc setups also use one entire disk-worth purely to produce “parity” blocks.

RAID Z functions on a particular open “file system” of operation called ZFS. While traditional RAID systems are grounded in hardware and usually work with different file systems, ZFS is part of RAID Z. The most significant contrast between RAID Z and traditional RAID arrays is how they store parity. RAID Z arrays have a layout unlike any other conventional RAID system.

In RAID Z arrays, the parity stripe widths vary; each level dedicates extra space to “parity” data.

Advantages of RAID Z Arrays

  • Increased complexity of parity stripes gives the system more ways to recover data
  • While disk rebuilding speed is slower, it is more successful on average
  • Specific hardware is not needed to work with the ZFS file system
  • Faster than RAID 5 & 6 arrays
  • Recovers better from multiple disk failure

Disadvantages of RAID Z Arrays

  • Far more complex configuration than traditional RAID arrays, which makes data recovery exponentially more difficult
  • Costly RAID level and difficult to set up
  • Total data corruption is irreversible
  • Slower than RAID 10 & 50 setups
  • Slow RAID volume rebuild speed compared to “mirroring” disks

Common Causes of RAID Z Arrays Failures

RAID Z handles multiple disk failures better than any traditional RAID array. But if you experience some catastrophic error on your ZFS file system, you will surely need a full RAID Z array recovery. The efforts to recover lost data from ZFS file systems are considered among the most complex tasks a data recovery technician can undertake.

Common Causes RAID Z Failures

  • Flooding, Fire, Overheating, or Smashing
  • RAID Controller Failure
  • Multiple Hard Drive Failures
  • Server Physical Failure Such as Motherboard
  • Corrupted ZFS File System Metadata due to Software Errors
  • Misplaced Disk in Setup Array
  • Failed Member Drives lead to a RAID Failure
  • ZFS Pool Mount Error due to File System Corruption

RAID Z Recovery

It is not simple to recover data stored in RAID Z Array. The complexity comes from its architecture and the ZFS volumes. Any mishandling can easily result in more data loss.

We do not recommend anyone attempt to recover the data from failed RAID Z volumes by themselves. It is not good to change the disk orders, making the drive recovery process harder. Instead, you contact us to request a technical evaluation of the case to determine the root cause of the failure.

PITS Global Data Recovery Services engineers use custom-built RAID recovery software and hardware platforms to achieve reliable and successful results. Even when ZFS recovery is considered a complicated process, our professionals will do everything they can to recover deleted files.
