Synology NAS Data Recovery

Network Attached Storage is a media storage device connected to a home or office network. You can store all files of your family and colleagues in the NAS system – both important documents and valuable photos, music, and videos. With a web browser or mobile apps, you can access files and use the various services provided by the NAS system over the Internet.

Synology has unveiled DiskStation DmS216, a feature-packed 2-bay NAS server suitable for workgroups and office environments, specially designed for data sharing and storage.

DX513 Disk Array Expansion Block increases the amount of HDD when running out of space on the NAS Synology. It supports drives up to 14Tb and is connected by a high-speed connection. Simple to connect and easy to configure. Synology DX513 can also be used as a dedicated local backup solution for Synology DiskStation. By creating a separate volume, it became the ideal solution for backing up data on hard disks in a system failure.

The NAS device is the optimal alternative, indispensable for a modern home. For easy data transfer, it is equipped with a USB port and a USB copy button on the front panel of the storage device. The system’s design allows you to hot-swap disks without the use of additional tools thanks to tool-less technology, also known as screwless mounting.

Synology NAS Failure

Each large or even medium-sized company, as a rule, has a clear strategy for the formation of its IT infrastructure and an established fleet of computer equipment. In some cases, this infrastructure bears traces of a progressive increase from a minimum to an optimum, in others it is the result of the implementation of a certain target project designed for the specific tasks of the organization.

Synology NAS Data Repair

One of the most pressing technical issues is the expansion of the ability of the entire IT system of the enterprise to store and distribute intensively generated volumes of data.

Synology NAS Power Failure

Recently we received a data recovery request from a system administrator of an IT company. One night a large capacitor in the UPS blew, sending a surge into the system. The result was two of the three hard drives in the system were fried. That was the only damage to the system, despite the surge needing to pass through the system control panel, power supply, motherboard, and SCSI daughterboard (all of which were undamaged) before getting to the drives.

Most NAS devices run customized versions of the Linux operating system. Most of the various RAID management systems are based on two RAID technologies in Linux: mdadm and LVM2. These systems create more user-friendly disk management interfaces while the underlying technology remains pure Linux.

Synology NAS Retrieval Process

As the client’s drives were out of order, the RAID file systems failed as well. The first step to recovering all the data was data retrieval from hard drives damaged by a power surge. In this case, the hard drives’ voltage regulator, also known as the TVS diode, burnt out.

The TVS diode is designed to protect against overvoltage of integrated and hybrid circuits and radio-electronic components. In case of overvoltage, such diode burns out.

Since the diode is no longer functioning, the disc is not turned on. If you remove the diode, the hard drive will again function normally, only in the unprotected mode. Our engineers extracted most of the data and transferred them to a new HDD.

The next step was to recover the RAID system that failed to overvoltage. Our highly trained team of engineers has years of experience working with such systems and their utility. Mdadm is a software RAID utility used in Linux systems.

It has several operating modes, such as assemble, build, and create. By using all the options that we had, we successfully recovered the RAID system of our customer. After the recovery process was finished, the client reviewed the result and confirmed the data retrieval procedure.

How to Avoid System Overvoltage

Any change in a network voltage that causes rising above the considered limit reduces the service life of connected devices or destabilizes their operation. Even minor deviations of 5-10% occur regularly, leading to failures in control units, reset of settings, and interference.

The most efficient and straightforward way to secure your system is to install a device that monitors and corrects any changes in voltage supply.

Synology NAS Calculator

The Synology NAS Calculator is a valuable tool to help users determine the optimal storage and RAID configurations for their Synology Network Attached Storage (NAS) systems. By using this calculator, users can plan their storage requirements, estimate storage capacity, and choose the best RAID configuration based on their specific needs.

The Synology NAS Calculator considers the number of drives, desired redundancy level, drive capacity, and performance to ensure a reliable and efficient NAS setup. This tool can help users make informed decisions when setting up their Synology NAS systems, providing a robust and well-optimized storage solution.

The main parameter when selecting devices capable of protecting against power outages is the output power, which is taken from the current multiplied by the voltage. Its value in Volt Amperes (BA) shall correspond to the total power consumed by the appliances. Therefore, before you purchase, you need to calculate the total power of the equipment that you plan to connect. Frequently Asked Questions

A power surge is a sudden increase in electrical voltage, and it can harm electronic devices like your Synology NAS. It can lead to hardware damage, data corruption, or even complete system failure.

Common signs of power surge damage include the NAS not powering on, unusual LED indicator behavior (e.g., flashing or changing colors), and data corruption or loss.

To protect your Synology NAS from power surges, use a high-quality surge protector or an uninterruptible power supply (UPS). These devices can regulate voltage and protect your NAS from sudden spikes.

Data recovery from a Synology NAS affected by a power surge is possible, but it depends on the extent of the damage. Professional data recovery services can assess the situation and attempt to recover your data.

While surge protectors and UPS devices are the most effective means of protection, you can also unplug your Synology NAS during electrical storms or when you anticipate power issues. However, this approach is not as convenient as using protective devices.
